"Specific Praise, Endless Inspiration"!

I was listening to Jennifer Gonzalez's podcast-"The Cult of Pedagogy" earlier today. I realized that I am one of the bloggers always suggesting what new strategy we could be trying or yes talking about how we should do more in engaging students. Gonzalez shared in her podcast that after a conversation with a dear friend who is a teacher, made the decision not to record her scheduled blog. She stopped to send the message that teachers need a win. That for many teachers, well meaning blogs, resources, podcasts, could be perceived as not doing enough. Thank you Jennifer for sharing that podcast -I decided to follow your lead and take a breather on my prescriptive blog post.

The tireless efforts of teachers are the backbone of our educational system. Despite their dedication, educators often find themselves navigating the labyrinth of educational content, blogs, podcasts, and initiatives. In this context, it's crucial to delve into the significance of offering teachers specific positive feedback and appreciation for the hard work they do.

Specific Validation

Teachers invest countless hours in crafting engaging learning experiences. The value of specific positive feedback lies in the validation it provides. When we acknowledge the specific strengths and efforts of teachers, it underscores that we've taken notice of their meticulous work.

Targeted Motivation General praise is uplifting, but specific positive feedback takes it a step further. It identifies particular actions, strategies, or achievements that warrant commendation. This level of specificity serves as a targeted motivator, encouraging teachers to continue their exceptional work.

Tailored Professional Growth

Specific feedback offers a roadmap for teachers' professional growth. By pinpointing their strengths and areas of improvement, educators can tailor their development plans. It's akin to giving them a compass, allowing them to navigate their continuous improvement journey more effectively. A Culture of Appreciation

The world of education is a dynamic one, often filled with shifting expectations. By providing specific positive feedback, we nurture a culture of appreciation. It demonstrates that we are genuinely invested in understanding the nuances of their work.

To recognize our teachers, let's consider specific ways:

  • Write a thank-you email or note highlighting specific instances where a teacher's approach or dedication had a significant impact,

  • Join campaigns that encourage sharing specific examples of how an educator's actions made a difference.

  • Encourage students to create personalized cards or tokens of appreciation, noting the exact qualities or efforts they admire.

  • Offer specific assistance or resources that align with an educator's professional goals, providing tangible support for their continuous improvement.

Let's take this opportunity to create a culture of appreciation where acts of kindness and specific positive feedback become the norm, ensuring that our teachers feel valued and motivated to continue their invaluable work. Instructional leaders, my message to you is to slow down, take time to listen to your staff. What is it they need?
