As you know, I'm a retired educator and a proud grandmother. Recently, I had an intriguing conversation with my son, about his son, my first grandchild, who just began his kindergarten year. Our discussion centered around the readiness of my grandson for this exciting transition to elementary school. As someone with years of experience in education, my son naturally turned to me for insights. In this blog post, I'll dive into our conversation, highlighting the importance of standards-based grading and how it can strengthen the bond of trust and understanding among parents, students, and educators.
I had the pleasure of assuring my son that my grandson possesses a plethora of qualities that bode well for his academic future. He radiates kindness, compassion, and an impressive attention span. His soft skills, vital for success, are finely honed. Moreover, he has an innate love for reading, a talent he subtly showcases by watching television with captions and reading along with ease. His growing interest in chess reflects his hunger for intellectual challenges, always eager to unravel the logic behind each move. He even surprised us all by reading two Dr. Seuss books as a heartfelt Mother's Day gift for his great grandmother.
However, my son expressed concerns about the school's approach to early education. He worried that the school might not fully appreciate my grandson's academic and social-emotional skills, as he'd heard that kindergarteners spend a lot of time on basic skills like counting and reading readiness. This revelation left my son pondering the forthcoming report cards. He questioned how traditional grading could effectively convey his son's progress and depth of understanding. Furthermore, he wondered if the school would provide stimulating opportunities to quench my grandson's thirst for knowledge.
These concerns have led my son to explore alternative education options, including the possibility of homeschooling, as he begins to lose confidence in the public school system's capacity to nurture his son's unique educational journey. As a retired educator, I share my son's apprehensions, and it deeply concerns me.
In response, I shared with my son the growing trend of standards-based grading in many schools. This assessment approach goes beyond conventional grading systems, offering a transparent and comprehensive means of communicating students' knowledge and abilities to both parents and students themselves.
Standards-based grading is all about evaluating what students know and can do, with a strong emphasis on mastering specific skills and content. It provides a clear roadmap for parents to grasp their child's academic progress and areas requiring further attention. This paradigm shift moves away from the mere assignment of grades to nurturing comprehensive learning experiences. With standards-based grading, my son could gain deeper insights into what his son is learning and how effectively he is mastering the content.
Standards-based grading holds the potential to serve as a bridge of trust and understanding between parents, students, and the education system. It empowers parents like my son to gain a clearer understanding of their child's academic journey, ensuring they receive the support and challenges necessary for their growth. By embracing this progressive approach, we can rekindle our faith in the public education system and provide every student with the opportunity to reach their full potential.
We've been talking about Standards Based Grading (SBG) and equitable grading practices for over 20 years. There are many considerations to ensure SBG implementation is successful in your classroom, school, and division. Stakeholders must have time to understand, ask questions, and own the process. The next several blog posts will highlight what current authors, influencers, educators, parents, and the industry share about Standards Based Grading.
